The Census Matters

Starting in 1790, and every 10 years since, the United States has conducted a census. The data collected determines how federal funding is allocated towards states and communities each year for building schools, hospitals and new roads, to guide public funding to help those in need and to help local governments make critical decisions.
The census helps your community: Census data helps communities respond to natural disasters and secure funding for hospitals and fire departments.
Think of your morning commute: Census results influence highway planning and construction, as well as grants for buses and other public transit systems.
Or think of your local schools: Census results help determine how money is allocated for Head Start and nutrition programs and for grants that support teachers and special education.
The list goes on, including programs to support rural areas, to restore wildlife, to prevent child abuse, to prepare for wildfires, and to provide housing assistance for older adults.
